Learning Sustainability in Communication Design

We are currently facing ecological, pandemic and economic crises, which are due to our anthropocentric way of life. Interdisciplinary plans for a more sustainable future are urgently needed to help future generations to leave a world worth living in. What role does design play? How can sustainability be visualized? How, by which concepts and design means can sustainability be implemented and anchored in society? Is design at all a relevant factor for future transformation processes towards a more sustainable future? If so, how can cross-media communication design be critically understood as an effective strategy that can promote sustainable thinking and action without being instrumentalized? And how can these questions and possible answers be integrated into university teaching in terms of content and methodology? The lecture aims to explore this topic and present concepts that can sensitize students of communication design to sustainability issues as part of their teaching.
