Designing creative audio worlds: Exploring stories in sound and text

Music and sound can bring stories to life. Sound effects lend poems, narratives and dialogues a special atmosphere and open up space for an ‘inner stage’ (Wickert 1954: 509) in the minds of listeners.

In the seminar, we first immerse ourselves in the world of audio media: from radio and radio plays to podcasts, reports and historical audio documents, we learn about inspiring examples. These serve as a starting point for our own creative projects, in which we combine sound design and text. We explore how sounds can emphasise actions, shape atmosphere and specifically guide emotions. In doing so, we will take an in-depth look at sound design techniques in order to use music and sounds in such a way that our stories are not only heard, but experienced.

In addition to sound, the focus is also on writing: How do you find your writing flow? What makes good storytelling? How do you create credible characters, choose the right words and adapt your style to the respective context? We examine the creative scope offered by language and how content can be tailored to a specific target group.

The seminar thrives on experimentation and exchange. Together, we explore different genres, reflect on and discuss approaches, develop projects individually or in teams, and give each other feedback. At the end, we present the resulting works at the Bergwerk and invite the audience into our self-created soundscapes.
