For many animals, swarm behavior is essential for survival. But what about humans and technology? “In the Swarm” offers an interdisciplinary look at the topic and examines swarm behavior from the perspective of various scientific fields. In this project, Jule and Carla seek above all to answer the question of how the “we” emerges from the “I.”
In the final concept, three media were selected to provide viewers of the work with a holistic insight into the topic. A video showing various types of swarms brings movement to the installation and serves as a dynamic layer. An abstract sculpture connects all the media and, on an emotional level, evokes both a swarm and an emergent system. A book that provides in-depth insight into the subject matter; drawing on various scientific fields and numerous examples, it forms the rational layer and is, above all, content-driven.
“In a Swarm” makes it clear that the collective and community are something very essential, both in animals and in humans. While swarm behavior carries many risks, it also presents numerous opportunities that could be very beneficial to us if we become aware of them.
